Vouwgrond - Paper craft soil layers
On a rainy weekend I have created a website that allows you to select a location in the Netherlands and automatically generate a template for you to cut and glue. This will result in a column with the soil layers. VouwGrond has its own site at www.vouwgrond.nl. It translates to "foldable soil", but also a word play on the Dutch word "bouwgrond" which means "building area"Data comes from the GeoTOP model, which has voxel blocks with a resolution of 100x100m and layers of 50cm. You can find more about this model at the website of Dinoloket.
The main purpose of VouwGrond is to have a moment away from the screen while doing a very simple data visualization project using paper craft. However, it is perfect to teach children something about soil layers as well!
In the future more than just soil lithography might be added; as the site received a lot of positive feedback!
Watch the following video to get a quick impression how quickly you can fold your own VouwGrond!
